About me

Here's the cliff notes to my story:

In 2006, Jamie earned a Bachelor of Science in Applied Learning and Development from the University of Texas at Austin with a minor in Early Childhood Studies. Jamie spent over a decade working for the public school system, mostly in middle school. During her time as a teacher, she noticed that some of her students struggled to learn due to what she called an emotional void. It was important for her to find a way to reach these students. The experience inspired her to pursue a Masters degree in Professional Counseling at Texas State University. During this time, Jamie learned trauma is the term used to describe this emotional void and how it affects children’s ability to learn. Due to her interest in trauma, Jamie has become trained in EMDRIFS, and ART.

Here's the longer story of me becoming a therapist:

Hello! It has always been my passion to help people. There have been many people who were helpful in my life and I would like to provide the same support. I want to be there for people during the hard times AND the good times. I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC),  National Board Certified Counselor (NCC), and Certified in Perinatal Mental Health (PMH-C). I am also a Texas State Certified Teacher (Early Childhood - Grade 4 and Generalist Grades 4-8) and a Certified School Counselor (Grades K-12).  I spent 13 years in public education with the last four years being a middle school counselor and a 504 Coordinator.

I began my career as a middle school teacher and Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning was an instrumental book to my teaching philosophy. I gravitated towards his message and felt like I could reach all students if I could help them find purpose and meaning to their life--so my “counseling” journey began in the classroom. My co-workers pointed out that I have a gift of working with the “more challenging” students. I was able to connect with my students and help them find meaning. As the years went on, I started to see a correlation between a child’s emotional self and their academic self.  I wanted to learn more about the emotional self and how it influences one’s academics. I decided to get my masters in professional counseling.

While working towards my masters degree, I was the Campus Support Specialist who helped struggling students succeed. I was blown away by how simple changes to my language could eliminate a power struggle between a student and how setting limits or providing choices could empower students so they could feel a sense of control. It was beautiful to experience such a change in my students along with a shift in my approach.

After graduation, I became a middle school counselor. I wanted to focus on the emotional self alongside the academic self. I had the honor of following 300 students from 6th grade to 8th grade, journeying with them through “the toughest years in life.”

I now love my role as a therapist where I get to journey with a single person - grow that connection and help them discover who they are and release the burdens they have been holding onto. It has been an honor to work with my clients and there is nothing better than to hear the words, "wow, I think I surpassed goals, I no longer need you!"  My goal is to help you heal and find your resources so you will no longer need me.  Therapy with me tends to be more long-term as I like to get to the root cause and not just provide your with coping skills. We will go as deep as you want.
